German artist Katharina Grosse spray-paints a building at Fort Tilden, NY

MoMa PS1 authorized German artist Katharina Grosse to spray-paint Superstorm Sandy ruin at the Gateway National Recreation Area at Fort Tilden, New York, for the 2016 edition of its ongoing series “Rockaway“.

The small building was deemed structurally unsafe in 2013 following Hurricane Sandy, which devastated the area, and is set to be demolished later this year.

Before destruction, Grosse used a palette of reds, oranges, pinks and white influenced by the area’s sunsets to turn the building into an art installation.

She uses a technique in which brightly colored paint is sprayed directly onto site-specific structures. In doing so, she incorporates both the architectural features of the space, and materials located in its immediate vicinity, such as sand, trees, sea grass and pavement,” according to a project description.
