On every year for 25 years in Jukkasjärvi is being eminent the famous Swedish ICEHOTEL. Starting the build-up in October with the ice taken from the nearby Torne river, the place is open for tourism in December. The ICEHOTEL is being annually visited by fifty thousand people, some of which choose to sleep in the rooms that preserve a mild air temperature of 17ºF.
The sculptural and often ornate design of the building’s “art suites” is the work of handpicked artists from around the world, and is one of the most popular aspects of staying at the hotel. See photos from this year’s suites, and learn more about ICEHOTEL’s construction, after the break.
The entire design of the lodgings, meaning sculptural and decoration, is established by 42 artists from 11 various countries. This is counted as one of the most attractive piece at the ice housing.
Theoretically the hotel needs about eight weeks of work from no less than 100 men unit but practically the concretization begins with months ahead. The ice taken from the river Torne in March is measured in tons, for about 1000 tons and put in cold depository for the summer.
In October the ice meets the construction of walls and furniture of the hotel. The ice ingots are covered in reindeer cover-up. The architecture is given by the solid blend of snow and river ice, 30,000 cubic meters of the mix erects the 55,00 square meter building. From this mixture sprayed onto metal cavities are framed the vaults. The ICEHOTEL offers 62 rooms with icy halls and 72 heated rooms that are independent from the principal structure.
The duration of the construction is estimated to end in April due to the spring defrosting.
